"What are you?"

- Queen Ojo, upon meeting Eva Nine

Queen Ojo is the leader of the alien immigrants who landed on a dead Earth and named it "Orbona " instead. Her father, King Ojo, was the former leader of the aliens who arrived in a massive ark. She resides in her palace in Solas , which is on the coast of Lake Concors . She also operates the Royal Museum in Solas, which displays various flora and fauna native to Orbona.

History[]

Ojo in Bedchambers

Queen Ojo, recalling the Great Migration to Eva Nine.

Queen Ojo was born at least two centuries before the events of the WondLa trilogy in the Safir solar system, which was inhabited by Cæruleans, Halcyonus, Dorceans, Mirthians. When that solar system's sun, Safir, began to decay and bombard the planets surrounding it with dangerous radiation, the inhabitants of the Safir system were forced to flee. Ojo fled with them, having filled a vial with her home planet's soil on the night before they left.

At some point in her life, her father, King Ojo, died, and Queen Ojo inherited the throne. She retained the Arsian Zin as an advisor, and maintained the Royal Museum, cataloging the native Orbonian life and the artifacts of extinct human civilization.

The Search for WondLa[]

When introduced to Eva Nine in the Taxidermist's lab, she regarded Eva as a "living fossil," and ordered her prepared for display as a highlighted museum exhibition.

The Battle for WondLa[]

Ojo and Eva

Queen Ojo witnesses Loroc's deception in an omnipod recording of Cadmus Pryde.

After invading Lacus, the human fleet descended on Solas, killing many civilians and destroying buildings. Many structures, including the Royal Menagerie, were heavily damaged, and fighting between warbots and pillar guards caused extensive collateral damage to the city. When the invasion stopped, Loroc claimed responsibility and promised an end to the human threat. Agreeing to meet with Eva Nine, Ojo explained her belief that humans were evil and that Loroc had saved the city; however, she was persuaded otherwise by a recorded meeting between the late Cadmus Pryde and Loroc on his omnipod. In a meeting with Orbonian leaders, however, he explained his plot to assume total control of the planet, and took Ojo hostage before imprisoning the representatives and plotting to consume them in order to expand his own powers. This was prevented by Eva Nine, however, who instigated Loroc's demise at his own hand before freeing Ojo and the other prisoners. Ojo was later depicted alongside Eva Nine in a Halcyonian mural memorializing the Battle of Solas.

Appearance[]

Ojo is much taller than the average human, or any other alien. She is at least fifteen feet tall, and has a vocal translator that hovers over her head wherever she goes. She has white skin and a flattened head, as well as black facial markings. She has two sets of arms, the upper one of which seems slightly larger than the other, and has no visible thumbs, suggesting that all of her fingers are opposable. When encountering the queen, it is considered respectful to kiss one of the many vials hanging from her neck, which contain soil from Ojo's homeworld, as the Taxidermist does when she enters the room. Her cloak has two winglike extensions on each shoulder, as well as a thick ruffled collar. She also has a headdress that resembles seaweed or leaves. Her eyes have horizontal irises, which are the symbol of her empire. She also has black facial markings or tattoos around her eyes, similar to the ancient Egyptians in the Age of Man.

Behind the Scenes[]

Ojo means "eye" in Spanish, which may be a reference to the frequent appearance of Ojo's eye as a symbol, and to the use of eyes as a symbol of power and control throughout the series (for example, a human eye is projected at the apex of Attican Hall). Her face, number of limbs, and skin color are all similar to that of axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum), a rare amphibious organism native to Mexico. Her headdress also resembles the leaf-like gills of an axolotl.
